Davon House Returns Home to Green Bay

A article from Michael Cohen. A great read on Davon House Returns Home.

GREEN BAY – When the Green Bay Packers are on the practice field, it behooves the viewer to pay attention as players work through individual drills led by assistant coaches. More specifically, it’s worth noting the order in which reps are taken.

Though it’s far from an exact science, there is an obvious tendency for players to line up in a manner that reflects the general parameters of the depth chart. Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb lead the wide receivers. Clay Matthews and Nick Perry get things started for the outside linebackers. Mike Daniels takes charge of the defensive line.

Earlier this week, it was familiar face Davon House acting as frontrunner for the cornerbacks.

“Now I’m in a role where I’m going out there every time,” House said after Tuesday’s practice. “They call the ones, I’m the first one out doing the reps and the drills. I’m leading by example, I guess you could say. So my role has changed a little bit.

“People might look at me like I’m weird, but I kept all my Packers stuff after I left here. I watched every game, recorded the games. Rooted for you guys except when we played you guys in Jacksonville. But I mean I was rooting for you guys. I felt like I was still a Packer deep down inside.

“I wasn’t going to go anywhere else, unless things were just ridiculously different than here. But this is where I wanted to be, this is where I needed to be, for me to show the world what I can do type (of) thing.”

A fourth-round pick by the Packers in 2011, House returned to Green Bay during free agency when he signed a one-year, $2.8 million deal after the Jaguars released him March 6. He instantly became the most experienced cornerback on the Packers’ roster with six accrued seasons — no one else has more than three — and will be asked to juggle a number of different hats in his second stint with the team: leader for a youthful group; mentor to second-round pick Kevin King; probable starter in Week 1.

It’s a role he is eager to fill.

“All I’ve got to do is teach what the vets taught me,” House said. “I was lucky to have Tramon (Williams), Sam Shields, Charles Woodson, me and Casey (Hayward) came around at the same time, Jarrett Bush. We’re talking about leadership. If anyone is talking about being a Hall of Famer, I had Woodson. If someone was an undrafted guy, like Herb (Waters) wants to talk about starting from the bottom, I mean Williams did it. You have nickel guys, Casey was a nickel here, so if guys want to talk about that, Casey was the guy. Those are guys I can talk about, the way they did things, the way they worked as references, so it’s easy.”

The Packers lacked a veteran presence for what amounted to the entirety of the 2016 season. Sam Shields, the unquestioned No. 1 corner, spent the majority of the year away from Lambeau Field after suffering a concussion in Week 1 that wound up ending his career. He recovered for several months in his native Florida as the youngsters behind him — Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter — stumbled through their second seasons in the league.

“Sam’s presence meant a lot, especially to guys that are just two-year players,” Rollins said. “But having House in the room, it brings an older element to the room, a guy who has been around here on some great teams definitely will benefit us. I feel it.”

Randall and Rollins are entering what might be defining years in their NFL careers. Though both players were hampered by groin injuries that required surgery, their on-field performances were queasy enough to force general manager Ted Thompson to use his top draft choice on a cornerback for the second time in three years. If the Packers truly believed injuries were the only issue with Randall and Rollins, it’s unlikely Thompson would have selected King with the first pick of the second round.

“You definitely got to learn from it,” Rollins said of his performance last season. “That’s with anything you do in life. But I just didn’t play to my standards, so getting back to that this year is definitely my main focus.”

Added House: “We’ve got a chance to win the Super Bowl every year. Hopefully with me coming back, we can get that done. I mean with all the injuries we had in the cornerback room last year, if they had me or they had Casey, or if Sam never got hurt, they’re going to the Super Bowl. That’s one of the reasons I feel like I’m lucky.”

The arrivals of House and King are likely to limit the playing time for Rollins and Randall in terms of perimeter snaps next season, evidenced by the alignments used during Tuesday’s organized team activity. In the nickel defense, which is the de facto base for the Packers, the most frequent combination featured House and Gunter on the perimeter with Randall playing the slot. Rollins took the majority of his reps in the slot as well.

When the Packers switched to dime, everything stayed the same and safety Morgan Burnett played as the second slot corner. Kentrell Brice slid in alongside Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at safety.

Come June, when King returns to Green Bay after final exams at Washington, the rotations are likely to shuffle again. Returners from last year have four months to prove the miscues from 2016 were flukes.

“We’re not going to talk about it,” Rollins said. “We’re just going to continue to get better week after week, day after day and just see where we end up. But we’ve definitely got some strides we can make.”

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers are reconnecting with an old friend.

Davon House, a fourth-round draft pick of the Packers in 2011, agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Packers, a source disclosed Tuesday. The deal will pay House around $3.5 million a year, another source said.

House, who had left the Packers to sign a four-year, $24.5 million free-agent deal in 2015, was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 4.

The Packers were one of three teams interested in House, who completed a two-day visit with the Steelers on Tuesday morning.

The addition of House, who started 14 games in three years with the Packers, gives the team the veteran cornerback it had been seeking to replace Micah Hyde. House will get to compete with 2015 draft choices Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins as well as anybody the Packers draft for a starting spot.

House started 15 of 16 games for the Jaguars in 2015, but he fell out of favor in 2016 and the Jaguars cleared $6 million in cap space when they released him.

The 6-1, 200-pound House ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds at the 2011 scouting combine and had a vertical jump of 33½ inches.

Packers Ty Montgomery is Staying at Running Back

Ty Montgomery is staying at running back

Former receiver plans to change his number this offseason

GREEN BAY — Ty Montgomery is staying put at running back.

Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy confirmed during his season-ending news conference Thursday that Montgomery will remain in the backfield after converting from receiver in-season.

The former third-round pick led the Packers in rushing with 77 carries for 457 yards and three touchdowns in addition to catching 44 passes for 348 yards.

Montgomery also will switch from No. 88 to a number indicative of a NFL running back between 20 and 49. Players aren’t allowed to switch numbers during the season.

“Talking with Ty in his exit interview, he’s a running back,” McCarthy said. “He wants to change his number and that’s the way we’re going. He’ll spend the whole offseason clearly working at the running back position.”

The Packers began toying with the idea of moving Montgomery to running back during training camp, but McCarthy admitted that he never envisioned him finishing the season as the Packers’ starter.

That’s how things played out due to veteran running backs Eddie Lacy (ankle surgery) and James Starks (knee, concussion) combining to miss 17 regular-season games due to injury.

In the first game without either player, Montgomery produced 126 total yards (60 rushing, 66 receiving) in a 26-10 win over Chicago. He followed up that performance with a career game against the Bears in December, rushing for 162 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

“By no means did I think Ty Montgomery would be playing halfback and be there by himself against the Chicago Bears, but you have to be prepared for that,” McCarthy said.

“He and Randall (Cobb) have that (dual) dynamic to them that’s part of our offense, but to switch full bore, we were fortunate we made that decision there at the end of training camp to get Ty ready.”

McCarthy said the Packers plan to use Montgomery in a hybrid capacity next season with receiver still being his “secondary responsibility.”

Lacy, who finished the year on injured reserve, was off to the best start of his career with 71 carries for 360 yards (5.1 yards per attempt) through the first five games.

The fourth-year running back is one of 14 pending free agents currently on the Packers’ roster.

“I’d love to see Eddie back,” McCarthy said. “Eddie is going through a medical situation. I clearly understand his contract situation. That’s really something we’re continuing to work through.

“Until Eddie even clears the medical threshold, we’ll have to see where we are.”

Title: Packers Daniels’ featured in Sports Illustrated NFL Rising Stars Article

Packers DT Mike Daniels was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated Rising Stars Issue, and here at Mayfield Sports Marketing- we tend to agree with them.

There was a time that Packers star Defensive End, Mike Daniels, was a scrawny kid that was frequently bullied and lacked any sort of physical intimidation.  His father forced him to stand up for himself- and now he has taken on that role with the Packers defense.  Now a veteran, Daniels is doing everything that he can to rid the “Soft” perception that the Packers defense has been called by local media and Packer fans alike.

Daniels faced difficult odds after being drafted out of Iowa in the 4th round of the 2012 draft- especially considering that he has unusual size of 6’0”.  Since he entered the league in 2012 there have been many questions regarding the Packers defense and if the depth at each position would be enough to suffice over a 16 game season- that is except where Daniels is starting.  Since 2012 Daniels has only missed 2 games, those during his rookie season, and continues to be a stalwart up that opposing teams now have to game plan against.

Packers Ty Montgomery Excelling as Slash RB/WR

When running backs Eddie Lacy and James Starks went down, receiver Ty Montgomery was thrust into the role of the teams’ primary running back against Chicago- on short rest.  The Packers have viewed Montgomery as an explosive player since drafting him out of Stanford in the 2015 draft, and at 6’0” 216lbs.- Montgomery fits the prototypical running back profile.

Recent Bookings: Ty Montgomery

Montgomery has emerged into a difference maker, being targeted a combined 25 times in the last 2 games and recording 20 catches 164 yards in addition to 66 rush yards on 12 carries.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been impressed with Montgomery and how he has stepped up recently saying:

“I’m really proud of the way he played. There’s a lot to build on.”

Packers Run The Table

Posted in Mayfield Sports Marketing News, Motivational Speaking, Packer Appearances, Packer Appearances, Packer Autograph Sessions, Packer Community Involvement, Packer Speaking Engagement    |    Comments Off on Packers Run The Table

Aaron Rodgers never actually defined what “run the table” meant. The last six games of the regular season to ensure another playoff berth? Or all the way to Houston for Super Bowl LI?

Whatever his intent, the Green Bay Packers and their quarterback own the longest active winning streak among the NFC playoff teams, and whether momentum is anything other than some undefined intangible, perhaps the most important thing for coach Mike McCarthy’s team was the confidence that permeated through the visitors locker room after Sunday night’s 31-24 victory over the Detroit Lions.

“I believe in myself and my abilities, but I also believe in this team,” Rodgers said. “This wasn’t just a shot in the dark. It was an optimistic belief in my teammates that we were going to start handling adversity better.”

Rodgers somehow infused that into just about everyone around him with great performances from Ty Montgomery, Davante Adams, Jared Cook, Mike Daniels and more.

As much as anything, and that includes Rodgers’ own stellar play during the six-game winning streak, that feeling could be the best thing the Packers have in their favor as they head into Sunday’s playoff opener against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field.

The Packers have momentum, and Rodgers called that “contagious.”

“You have that feeling now when you enter a game that you don’t have during a losing streak, where you expect to win,” he said. “You expect to win when you take the field, and that’s an exciting energy that you can feel in the locker room and on the field pregame, and guys are sticking together.”

Several times during the streak, Rodgers has praised his teammates for not “making comments [or] being an unnamed source or saying derogatory things about teammates,” and coach Mike McCarthy last week described the team had “a little bit of an edge to them” that he noticed even before the streak began.

It was at the very least noteworthy — if not telling — that McCarthy described the reaction in the postgame locker room after winning the NFC North this way: “It wasn’t the best celebration we’ve ever had.”

“But this team has an energy, has an edge, has a confidence that was evident very early in our preseason,” McCarthy added. “And I’ve always believed in that and they believe in that. So maybe that’s why we’re not doing cartwheels right now because we have, like I said, our plan’s to try to win it all. We’re one of six that gets to go battle it out in the NFC and we’ll tighten our focus to the Giants. But we never lost sight of where we wanted to go.”

The number of players still around from the Super Bowl XLV team dwindles each year, but there are some key components of that team still around, Rodgers and Clay Matthews among them. And this team, the No. 4 seed in the NFC, might be similar to the 2010 wild-card club in at least one way.

“I don’t know if in 2010 we had all the pieces,” Matthews said. “I just think we got hot and no one wanted to play us then. Hopefully that’s the case this year.

“You need to be playing well toward the latter part of the season, and that’s exactly what we’re doing. I feel like we’re capable of getting back to where we want to go, and that’s the Super Bowl. So hopefully that’s the case.”

It would take a 10-game winning streak to do so. The six already off the table might have been the easy part.

“We have bigger aspirations,” McCarthy said, wearing an NFC North Champions hat. “So this is the first step.”
