A question as old as time:  Why does workplace productivity decrease in the summer?

Summer at work can be a fun time but also a dead period in which you are trying to find the motivation to complete tasks.

According to Brad Anderson for Calendar.com, who wrote this nugget about workplace productivity. "Studies show that workplace productivity plummets by 20 percent between June and August. "Additionally, attendance at work decreases by 19 percent, and workers are 45 percent more distracted."

Taking time for yourself, such as on a mental health day or a vacation, is an important reminder that taking care of yourself is OK.

However, in general, it's hard for people to focus on work when it's sunny and 80 degrees outside. That goes along with people who use social media at work, and they look at what they are missing out on.

With many hot days in the summer calendar, it's hard for people to concentrate due to the humidity making people less focused and more tired.

Some places use summer hours, which places close earlier on Fridays. But working long hours from Monday-Thursday can cause stress, even if they have fewer hours to work on Friday.

How To Increase Workplace Productivity During the Summer?

It's inevitable workplace productivity will go down in the summer. It's hard to ask people to stay focused on work for three months. However, there's a solution:  Book a professional sports speaker.

professional sports speakers have a lot to offer a workplace, and there are several ways an athlete speaker can benefit your workplace.

Here are some of the ways booking a professional sports speaker could increase workplace productivity in the summer:

Encouraging Teamwork

This is the biggest aspect in which work and sports are the same. Working together for a common goal helps bring everyone together. Outside of working together, communication is another key aspect to making sure you are working well together as a team.

What makes a good team is the ability to be open to new ideas. The top places to work are places where people get along and have the ability to be honest team members. Professional sports speakers no better than anyone about how good teamwork creates a winning culture. Sharing their perspectives on good teamwork could be beneficial to help instill a positive workplace culture.

Overcoming Obstacles

Everyone can relate to this idea. Every person in the world has had to overcome something, and it made them better in the long run. There have been managers and CEOs who started at the bottom of the company and progressively worked their way up. The same thing is true with professional sports speakers. They can relate because they had to outwork everyone to make it to the hardest leagues in the world.

How a Professional Sports Speaker Can Be Motivating?

Hard work eventually pays off. A professional sports speaker normally provides examples of what they had to get to where they're at. The same logic applies in the workplace. If you work and go above and beyond, managers begin to notice. It's similar to an athlete who's the first one in the last one out. In a workplace, an employee who puts in long hours, and does their best on every project, will eventually get rewarded.

An athlete speaker can inspire employees to do something to go the extra mile that they hadn't previously done.

Start by increasing workplace productivity in the summer by booking a professional athlete or coach to speak to your staff today with the help of Mayfield Sports Marketing.

Professional athletes and coaches make some of the best motivators for company employees.  Running a great company requires having great employees. Knowing how to motivate employees to do the job, and do it correctly, is a direct responsibility of the managers and owners of that company.

Here is why bringing in professional athletes and coaches to talk to your employees could make a drastic difference in what you see in return from your employees.

Perseverance

Coaches and athletes are ingrained with determination to achieve their goals. Taking those traits from the field to the boardroom makes any goal attainable your company may have as a result. In the workplace, the best employees subsequently never give up and always find a way to overcome obstacles. Failing will be a part of any corporation or business. Dealing with loss is something coaches, and athletes overcome every single season. When they struggle with performance, athletes will dedicate extra time to practice until they improve. Learning this trait can be how to motivate employees to prevent the same mistake from ever happening twice.

Knowing How To Motivate Employees to Put the Team First

Any corporation or business needs employees to have a "team first" mentality. A team-first mentality is about looking at your employees and viewing them as living, breathing organisms. An organism can live in a healthy manner if each of its organs is functioning and contributing to its overall health.

Coaches and athletes certainly understand that team goals always trump individual needs. Being part of a team means a serious commitment to the group. Personal sacrifices come with the territory. For athletes, that may mean giving up weekends for practice or maintaining a strict training diet. Applying that same mentality to the workplace establishes a commitment to achieving goals. Rewarding employees who carry these traits with more pay or time off (when able) will go a long way in answering the question, "how to motivate employees."

Handling Criticism

Becoming coachable consequently lets you take an objective look at your strengths and weaknesses in all areas of your life. Athletes and coaches have taken constructive criticism (and sometimes not so constructive) throughout their careers. Explaining to your employees that this type of criticism is in an attempt to better themselves, not degrade them, is vital to long-term success. Managers who know they can provide direct and honest feedback to their employees without worrying about hurting feelings, or losing productivity for the day, allow for quick solutions to problems that may arise as a result.

Start taking the first step in answering "how to motivate employees" by booking a professional athlete or coach to speak to your staff today with the help of Mayfield Sports Marketing.

Packers Hall of Famer Gilbert Brown has become a known member of the Wisconsin community, constantly making appearances at charity events. This weekend was no different as he and Mayfield Sports Marketing once again traveled to Brookfield, Wisconsin to help Tricia's Troops bring relief and support to families affected by cancer.

Tricia's Troops Origins

Cancer is such an awful disease. Not only does it drain a person’s body of their health, youth, and vigor, but it strains those suffering from it and their families in other ways. Chances are that you, yourself, have had or have had a loved one experience cancer. Undoubtedly, their physical sufferings, along with the emotional, mental, and spiritual tolls of the disease and its treatment, are all-too-familiar.

Such was the case for Tricia Wright. A native of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Tricia was diagnosed with stage four liver cancer on January 16, 2010. Additionally, her diagnosis included metastasis to her liver and lungs. At the time, Tricia was 35, married, and the mother of two little girls. While her prognosis was not good, Tricia and her family opted to fight the disease with chemotherapy.

As many know, chemotherapy is not an easy treatment. Members of her church, Dr. Martin Luther Church, provided her and her family with cards and meals. Eventually, they became known as Tricia’s Troops. Per the Tricia’s Troops website, "Tricia and her family realized that the support they received from their friends and community was not something that all cancer patients and families received."

For this reason, Tricia and her husband started a non-profit organization called Tricia’s Troops Cancer Connection. Their goal was to provide the love and support they received after her diagnosis to every family affected by cancer.

Tricia Wright died on April 26, 2012, 15 months after her diagnosis. Her legacy of kindness and care for others certainly lives on in the foundation that she started.

Mayfield Sports Marketing & Gilbert Brown Join the Cause

Gilbert surprises Kara Mayfield on her first anniversary of beating breast cancer with a gift.

Mayfield Sports Marketing and Packers legend Gilbert Brown were proud to once again partner with Tricia’s Troops. Together, they helped raise money to bring relief and support to families affected by cancer.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, Gilbert and Mark Mayfield joined Tricia's Troops in Brookfield, Wisconsin for a charity event that has raised over $100,000 at an event in previous years.

“We are absolutely honored and humbled to work with Candi, Bill, and the entire Wright family on the Tricia’s Troops events," Mark said. "Packers legend Gilbert Brown, and I have attended the event since 2015. The work that they do is very inspiring, and we are proud to assist in their mission.”

This is a continuation of Mark's non-profit work. In the past, he has worked with players such as, Ahman Green, Hall of Famer Leroy Butler, Hall of Famer Jerry Kramer, Hall of Famer Dave Robinson, Kenny Clark and Olympians Bonnie Blair and Chellsie Memmel.

In addition, if you or someone you love is facing a battle with cancer, please visit the Tricia’s Troops Programs page on their website.

During a recent interview on the show "Highly Questionable", our friend and partner James Jones talked about his struggles with homelessness as a child and how it has inspired him today to not only stay humble as one of the top wide receivers in the league,  but also to start his own non-profit foundation.

Love Jones 4 Kids Foundation was started by Jones and his wife, Tamika. The mission of the foundation is to "enrich the lives of children living in disadvantaged and underserved communities by conducting and sponsoring a variety of programs to help young people overcome obstacles, stay in school and prepare for challenges in life."

Jones also shared a romantic, yet semi-humorous story while on the show. He shared the story of his proposal to his wife. It took place at one of her favorite restaurants, Red Lobster. Jones went to the restaurant the day before he popped the question to set the proposal up. The next night when they were out for dinner, not only did Tamika's favorite delicious cheddar biscuits get served to their table, but along came a diamond ring with Tamika's name on it!

We have said it before and we will say it again, Mayfield Sports is proud to work with a man as humble and hardworking as James Jones. Started from the bottom : Mike Daniels, not Clay Matthews, Will Lead Packers’ Defense

NFL, Green Bay Packers, Mike Daniels, Packers defense, 2014 Packers defense, Dom capers, 2014 Packers Training Camp, 2014 Packers preseason

Green Bay Packers fans have been screaming for what seems like forever about how the team needs a new attitude on defense. They’re understandably frustrated with seeing Green Bay’s defense get shredded year after year.

Some have called (loudly) for the firing of defensive coordinator Dom Capers but head coach Mike McCarthy apparently saw things differently and Capers is back again for 2014. Don’t let the return of the coordinator fool you, however. This is not the Packers defense fans have come to know and love/loathe from the past three seasons.

With the addition of Julius Peppers and first round pick HaHa Clinton-Dix, the defense seems prime for a rebound and if training camp and half the preseason are any indication, there is reason for optimism about the Packers defense in 2014.

Does it help that Clay Matthews will be healthy again? Of course. It’s never a bad thing when a player of his caliber is at full strength after two consecutive seasons battling various injuries including a hamstring and a (twice) broken thumb.

Another big reason to be excited about the Green Bay defense in 2014, even more than the return to health of Matthews, is defensive end Mike Daniels. Last year while Matthews was either out or limited with the thumb injury, Daniels broke out and showed signs of becoming the second fearsome pass rusher the Packers have been so desperately seeking. Daniels tallied 6.5 sacks and had 23 combined tackles while playing in all 16 games.

Take what he’s shown so far this preseason and one thing is becoming clear: it could be Daniels, not Matthews, that emerges as the leader of the 2014 Green Bay defense.

This is by no means any kind of a slight against the Claymaker, who has earned all the accolades he has received so far in his career. Matthews is a terrific pass rusher, but at times seems to lack that killer “I’m coming at you and I want to rip your head off”-type instinct that so many all-time great linebackers have. Take Dick Butkus or Ray Lewis, for example.

That is where Daniels comes into play. His repeated statements about being sick of seeing the defense pushed around and his willingness to “slap someone” are injections of fire and attitude the defense badly needs. The Packers have been accused in recent years of being “soft” and while things on the offense have improved with the arrival of running back Eddie Lacy, the criticism is definitely still valid.

Not if Daniels has his way. His combination of speed, power and hunger have him on the verge of becoming one of the NFL’s best defensive ends. If you combine his emergence and assume Julius Peppers still has something left in the tank plus a healthy Matthews, then suddenly the Packers have quite a ferocious pass rush. That in turn would take some pressure off the secondary where they have one rookie safety and another who is converting from playing cornerback last season (Micah Hyde).

Daniels may not run up a terribly high sack total thanks to linebackers being primary blitzers in a base 3-4, but his presence is going to be felt. If he opens up gaps for Peppers, Matthews and the rest of the linebackers, that’s fantastic. If Daniels can consistently get into the backfield however, then the Packers have one more weapon on their hands and all signs right now point to this being the case.
With the preseason only half complete, so many people are still solely focused on what Peppers will bring to the Green Bay defense or when it will “click” for Datone Jones. Even after the game he played in St. Louis where he was as disruptive as ever, not many national writers and analysts are focusing on Daniels.

By the end of the 2014 season, they will be. The Packers have a budding star on the defensive line and he’s flying under the radar.

Just how Mike Daniels wants it. Kris Burke is a sports writer covering the Green Bay Packers for AllGreenBayPackers.com and WTMJ in Milwaukee

Sports marketing business moving into high gear Oconomowoc owner works to bring Packers, others to the area

By Kevin Passon - Special to The Freeman

OCONOMOWOC - It’s been a year since Mark Mayfield left the security of a full-time job to work at getting his own sports marketing business off the ground. And in those 12 months, his expectations have been exceeded only by the level of interest from the groups he’s helped and the players he’s booked.

Nonprofit organizations are usually assured of raising more money at fundraisers if they have a celebrity in attendance. And large associations usually have higher attendance at conferences if the keynote speaker is a professional athlete.

“I am essentially a booking agency for professional athletes,” said Oconomowoc’s Mark Mayfield, owner of Mayfield Sports Marketing. “I need to make sure it’s a good fit for them (the group and the athlete). Mayfield Sports represents the best interests of the player.”

Rates for appearances by current and former Brewers or Packers range from $1,000 to $30,000 for a 90-minute appearance. Signing of autographs and a photo session can either be with an extra fee or built into the base price.

Strong, personal relationships

Mayfield has a direct relationship with the players or their agents, so when booking them, the response time is much faster than if a business or organization tries to book them alone.

Mark Mayfield, left, and former Green Bay Packer William Henderson, right, are joined by Bucky Badger. Submitted photo

Recent bookings have included current Green Bay Packers Dujuan Harris, Nick Perry, Jerron McMillian, Eddie Lacy, Johnathan Franklin, Datone Jones, Micah Hyde, Don Barclay, Josh Sitton, Bryan Bulaga, Chris Banjo, Jerel Worthy, Mike Daniels, John Kuhn, Sam Shields and Morgan Burnett; former Packers Gilbert Brown, William Henderson, Dorsey Levens, Santana Dotson, Mark Tauscher, Dave Robinson and Ahman Green; Packers President Mark Murphy; billiards world champion Allison Fisher; Olympic and World Champion gymnast Chellsie Memmel; and former Wisconsin Badger and New York Giants player Ron Dayne.

“Usually an association will call and either be very specific about a particular player they want or be very vague and say they just want a current member of the Packers,” Mayfield said. “I ask a bunch of questions to better figure out what they want - a celebrity appearance, autographs, a motivational speaker or whatever. I’m always very honest with the client. You get what you want, but we can guide you in the selection. I generally give the client a menu of options.”

Mayfield makes a point of being at nearly every one of the events for which he books a player or former player. Part of the reason for this is to oversee that everything goes as planned, but it’s also good business. The player becomes more familiar with him, which can lead to more bookings, and the organization meets him, which also can lead to bookings for future events.

About half of the bookings Mayfield sets up are in the Green Bay and Appleton areas, simply by default of being closer to the Packers. But, there are others in the Madison and Milwaukee areas. Waukesha Sports uses him quite often to help bring in players.

Anderson, former Olympic gymnast Chelsie Memmel, former Green Bay Packer Gilbert Brown and Wisconsin American Legion Adjutant David Kurtz. Submitted photo

“We have at least two signings every month,” said Robb Dobbratz, owner of Waukesha Sports. “He’s got a good relationship with a lot of players. He’s an up and coming guy, and he’s going to grow.”

Dobbratz also uses Mayfield to book players at autograph sessions in Green Bay.

The next big signing at Waukesha Sports will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 1, when current Packers Lacy, Perry and McMillian will be on hand. The latter two were booked by Mayfield.

A chance encounter

Mayfield’s business started a few years ago when he was an employee at Olympia Resort in Oconomowoc, and Gilbert Brown was there for a few days for a promotional event. After talking a few times over the next five days, Brown paid Mayfield to design a website for him.

“That’s where it started,” Mayfield said. “Now I talk to Gilbert three or four times every week.”

A lot of Mayfield’s business among current players is through word of mouth. When he has an inquiry about a player he’s not worked with before, Mayfield first calls one of his current clients for an introduction. It doesn’t take long after that to sign a deal.

“For me, it’s all about people, communicating with people,” he said. “I’m always very clear with them. I don’t leave any gray areas. I don’t want to let the client down.

“Gilbert Brown trained me on that. If he shakes your hand and says he’ll do something, he’ll do it. I want to be that same way.”

He said he’s glad he had the presence and the confidence to talk to Brown at the beginning. That chance meeting sparked his new career.

“It’s very rewarding, because I earned it,” he said. “It’s very humbling. I had some help along the way, but I’ve worked very hard to be where I am today.”
