Packers Training Camp - Ty Montgomery, who was labeled the starter during OTAs. This is Montgomery’s first training camp as a full-time running back and a prime opportunity to reinforce — or tear down — the notion that a converted wide receiver can succeed as the No. 1 tailback for an entire season.

“He’s just stepped out in front and just keeps going,” McCarthy said. “ … He looks good. I’m very pleased with the way he has stepped up to the front of the class.”

The second lens is nearly as green as Montgomery. When general manager Ted Thompson declined to bring in a veteran running back to complement Montgomery, it became clear the Packers would need to address the issue through the draft. Thompson responded by using three of his 10 picks on tailbacks, with fourth-round choice Jamaal Williams being the highest selection. Eventually, talent or injuries should separate one or two players from the proverbial pack to fall in line behind Montgomery.

“You just work through it,” McCarthy said. “The teaching part of it in the classroom, we’ve got the gymnasium walk-throughs and things like that. You’re really focused on doing more of that when you have that high — because we’re obviously very young at the running back position. That’s the stuff you focus on. The reps usually takes care of itself. Frankly, the players’ availability and their performance level each day really controls who gets the reps.”

There should be plenty of snaps to go around. Courtesy Milwaukee Journal

Ty Montgomery is staying at running back

Former receiver plans to change his number this offseason

Running Back Ty Montgomery

Green Bay Packers Running Back Ty Montgomery

GREEN BAY —Ty Montgomery is staying put at running back.

Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy confirmed during his season-ending news conference Thursday that Montgomery will remain in the backfield after converting from receiver in-season.

The former third-round pick led the Packers in rushing with 77 carries for 457 yards and three touchdowns in addition to catching 44 passes for 348 yards.

Montgomery also will switch from No. 88 to a number indicative of a NFL running back between 20 and 49. Players aren’t allowed to switch numbers during the season.

“Talking with Ty in his exit interview, he’s a running back,” McCarthy said. “He wants to change his number and that’s the way we’re going. He’ll spend the whole offseason clearly working at the running back position.”

The Packers began toying with the idea of moving Montgomery to running back during training camp, but McCarthy admitted that he never envisioned him finishing the season as the Packers’ starter.

That’s how things played out due to veteran running backsEddie Lacy(ankle surgery) andJames Starks (knee, concussion) combining to miss 17 regular-season games due to injury.

In the first game without either player, Montgomery produced 126 total yards (60 rushing, 66 receiving) in a 26-10 win over Chicago. He followed up that performance with a career game against the Bears in December, rushing for 162 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

“By no means did I think Ty Montgomery would be playing halfback and be there by himself against the Chicago Bears, but you have to be prepared for that,” McCarthy said.

“He and Randall (Cobb) have that (dual) dynamic to them that’s part of our offense, but to switch full bore, we were fortunate we made that decision there at the end of training camp to get Ty ready.”

McCarthy said the Packers plan to use Montgomery in a hybrid capacity next season with receiver still being his “secondary responsibility.”

Lacy, who finished the year on injured reserve, was off to the best start of his career with 71 carries for 360 yards (5.1 yards per attempt) through the first five games.

The fourth-year running back is one of 14 pending free agents currently on the Packers’ roster.

“I’d love to see Eddie back,” McCarthy said. “Eddie is going through a medical situation. I clearly understand his contract situation. That’s really something we’re continuing to work through.

“Until Eddie even clears the medical threshold, we’ll have to see where we are.”

Aaron Rodgers never actually defined what "run the table" meant. The last six games of the regular season to ensure another playoff berth? Or all the way to Houston for Super Bowl LI?

Whatever his intent, the Green Bay Packers and their quarterback own the longest active winning streak among the NFC playoff teams, and whether momentum is anything other than some undefined intangible, perhaps the most important thing for coach Mike McCarthy's team was the confidence that permeated through the visitors locker room after Sunday night's 31-24 victory over the Detroit Lions.

"I believe in myself and my abilities, but I also believe in this team," Rodgers said. "This wasn't just a shot in the dark. It was an optimistic belief in my teammates that we were going to start handling adversity better."

Rodgers somehow infused that into just about everyone around him with great performances from Ty Montgomery, Davante Adams, Jared Cook, Mike Daniels and more.

As much as anything, and that includes Rodgers' own stellar play during the six-game winning streak, that feeling could be the best thing the Packers have in their favor as they head into Sunday's playoff opener against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field.

The Packers have momentum, and Rodgers called that "contagious."

"You have that feeling now when you enter a game that you don't have during a losing streak, where you expect to win," he said. "You expect to win when you take the field, and that's an exciting energy that you can feel in the locker room and on the field pregame, and guys are sticking together."

Several times during the streak, Rodgers has praised his teammates for not "making comments [or] being an unnamed source or saying derogatory things about teammates," and coach Mike McCarthy last week described the team had "a little bit of an edge to them" that he noticed even before the streak began.

It was at the very least noteworthy -- if not telling -- that McCarthy described the reaction in the postgame locker room after winning the NFC North this way: "It wasn't the best celebration we've ever had."

"But this team has an energy, has an edge, has a confidence that was evident very early in our preseason," McCarthy added. "And I've always believed in that and they believe in that. So maybe that's why we're not doing cartwheels right now because we have, like I said, our plan's to try to win it all. We're one of six that gets to go battle it out in the NFC and we'll tighten our focus to the Giants. But we never lost sight of where we wanted to go."

The number of players still around from the Super Bowl XLV team dwindles each year, but there are some key components of that team still around, Rodgers and Clay Matthews among them. And this team, the No. 4 seed in the NFC, might be similar to the 2010 wild-card club in at least one way.

"I don't know if in 2010 we had all the pieces," Matthews said. "I just think we got hot and no one wanted to play us then. Hopefully that's the case this year.

"You need to be playing well toward the latter part of the season, and that's exactly what we're doing. I feel like we're capable of getting back to where we want to go, and that's the Super Bowl. So hopefully that's the case."

It would take a 10-game winning streak to do so. The six already off the table might have been the easy part.

"We have bigger aspirations," McCarthy said, wearing an NFC North Champions hat. "So this is the first step."
